School-based apprenticeships and traineeships

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SATs) allow high school students to work for an employer, train towards a recognised qualification, and complete their secondary school studies. They are available across a wide range of fields, from automotive to business; radio broadcasting to watchmaking. SATs provide students with:

More than 45 000 young people have experienced the benefits of SATs since the program first started in Queensland over 10 years ago. The Queensland Government recognises the benefits of SATs for our young people and is aiming to double the number of school-based apprentices and trainees in Queensland over the coming years. For more information, see School-based apprenticeships and traineeships: the Queensland Government agenda [PDF 433kb].

Note to school-based apprentices who completed Year 12 in 2008 and are expected to receive their QCE in July 2009: You will receive a letter advising of the number of QCE credit points you are entitled to for the on-the-job component of your apprenticeship. These credits are allocated by the Queensland Studies Authority and calculated by the Department of Education and Training (DET) based on the number of days an apprentice is required to work. If you receive your letter and disagree with the calculated number of days you should have worked, you will need to submit a Review of Days Worked application form [PDF 161kb] to your nearest district office [PDF 525kb].
