Changing, completing, cancelling
A variety of issues may arise during a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship (SAT). They usually relate to changing, completing or cancelling the SAT.
If your issue is not listed below, please phone Apprenticeships Info on 1800 210 210 or email your query to Apprenticeships Info at apprenticeshipsinfo@qld.gov.au.
Further information can also be accessed via the information sheets section on this website.

Extending the probationary period
The probationary period allows the school-based apprentice or trainee and the employer opportunity to assess their compatibility and the school-based apprentice/trainee's suitability to the apprenticeship or traineeship.
The employer or the school-based apprentice or trainee may apply to extend the probationary period in certain circumstances including:
-
where the employer is dissatisfied with the apprentice or trainee's progress
-
the school-based apprentice or trainee is uncertain about their suitability to the school-based apprenticeship or traineeship (SAT).
The following resources are useful for information regarding the probationary period:
Further information can also be accessed by contacting Apprenticeships Info on 1800 210 210.
Amending from school-based to full-time or part-time
School-based apprentices and trainees who do not complete their apprenticeship or traineeship prior to finishing school will need to have their training contracts amended from school-based to either part time or full time as soon as they finish school.
Completion of the Amendment of school-based training contract form [PDF 112kb] is required for approval by the Queensland Department of Education and Training (DET).
Normal award wages and conditions apply once the contract is converted to a full-time or part-time arrangement.
Extending the term of the school-based apprenticeship or traineeship (SAT)
If it is unlikely that the school-based apprentice or trainee will complete the training by the completion date, the employer or the school-based apprentice/trainee should apply to the Department of Education and Training (DET) for an extension of the nominal term and amend the training plan.
The application for an extension must be made prior to the nominal completion date of the apprenticeship or traineeship.
The employer, school-based apprentice or trainee and supervising registered training organisation can apply for an extension of the nominal term by writing a letter, or by completing the Extension of nominal term form [PDF 120kb] and sending the letter or completed form to the local office of DET.
Changing the Supervising Registered Training Organisation
The employer and the school-based apprentice or trainee may agree to change their supervising registered training organisation (SRTO) during the apprenticeship or traineeship.
The employer must:
-
write to the SRTO advising them that they are to be replaced, including the date for the replacement (which can be no sooner than 14 days after the date written notice is given)
-
advise the Queensland Department of Education and Training by completing the Change of training organisation form [PDF 122kb].
The SRTO that is being replaced must provide the school-based apprentice or trainee with a statement of attainment to confirm training that has been completed. This must be provided on or before the replacement date.
The new SRTO will need to develop a new training plan with the employer and the school-based apprentice or trainee.
To learn more, read about replacement of a training organisation on the Changing the Training Contract information sheet.
Completing the school-based apprenticeship or traineeship (SAT)
The SAT is complete when the school-based apprentice or trainee, the employer and the training organisation agree that all the requirements of the training plan have been met.
All SATs in Queensland are competency-based. This means that when all the competencies are achieved, the school-based apprentice or trainee may complete - regardless of time served.
The certificate of completion is issued by the Queensland Department of Education and Training and is additional to the qualification or statement of attainment that be issued by the training organisation.
To learn more, read the information sheet on the completion process.
Cancelling the training contract
The training contract entered into by the school-based apprentice or trainee and the employer is legally binding.
Cancellation of a training contract should only be considered as a last resort once all efforts have been made to resolve the issues that jeopardise the school-based apprenticeship or traineeship (SAT).
Officers from the Department of Education and Training (DET) can help work through any issues that the school-based apprentice or trainee and the employer may have.
Employers, school-based apprentices or trainees and parents/guardians (where applicable), may agree in writing to cancel a training contract for a SAT at any time.
Where all parties to the training contract agree to the cancellation, the employer must send a written notice of the cancellation to the department within 14 days of the agreement.
Where all parties do not consent to cancel the training contract, the applicant requesting cancellation must apply in writing to the Training Queensland regional office of DET. The department will review the application and advise if the application for cancellation is approved or refused.
In circumstances where the training contract is cancelled the employer should inform the training organisation that the SAT has been cancelled.
To learn more, see the information sheets on Cancellation of training contracts where all parties agree and Cancellation of training contracts (application from one party).
