Student support strategies

Schools with successful school-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SATs) programs will often speak of the importance of strategies to support students throughout their traineeships and apprenticeships.

It is important for schools to support students before the training contract is signed, during the SAT, and as the student finishes school or completes their traineeship.

A proactive approach to promotion is the key to a successful SATs program according to Grant Mills from West Moreton Anglican College.

Although students generally do not commence their SAT until Year 10 or 11, students begin receiving information on the program from as early as Year 9.

"Early promotion of the program allows students and their parents plenty of time to consider undertaking an apprenticeship or traineeship while at school,"

"You name it and it can be done in a SAT - that's the message we promote to our students" Grant says.

"Students who are undertaking a SAT stand out in a crowd - they walk taller and prouder and have a greater maturity than their peers," he says.

Grant is convinced that getting the right student for the job is the key to ensuring employers keep coming back.

"Developing relationships with the employers and students allows me to match the right student to the right job," Grant said.
