What is the Apprenticeship/Traineeship Out-of-Trade Register?
The Queensland Government has established an apprenticeship/traineeship Out-of-Trade Register as part of its 'safety net' program for apprentices and trainees who may be let go because of the economic downturn.
Apprentices and trainees whose training contracts have been cancelled or are at risk of being cancelled, and who are looking to secure employment, in order to complete their training, can provide their details to be posted on the Out-of-Trade Register.
Employers have the opportunity to access the Out-of-Trade Register online, and identify any apprentices or trainees that meet their business requirements.
For Apprentices/Trainees
PLEASE NOTE: The Out-of-Trade Register is ONLY for apprentices/trainees who have previously been registered as an apprentice or trainee in Queensland and have since had their training contract cancelled or are at risk of being cancelled and are looking to secure employment in order to re-commence their apprenticeship or traineeship.
Cancelled apprentices and trainees relocating from interstate may also apply for inclusion on the Out-of-Trade Regsiter and may be requested to provide evidence of their previous training contract(s).
If you are interested in commencing an apprenticeship or traineeship for the first time, please visit our Apprentices & Trainees section for more information on becoming an apprentice/trainee.
Apprentices and trainees interested in registering with this service can complete the apprentices and trainees registration form online or email apprenticeshipsinfo@qld.gov.au, providing the following details:
- current contact details
- full name and date of birth
- the apprenticeship or traineeship calling
- the year level of the apprenticeship or traineeship
- the location/s in which you are seeking employment
- whether you are seeking full time and/or part time employment.
Registering your details on the Out-of-Trade Register does not guarantee employment.
Is your training up-to-date?
Apprentices and trainees whose training contracts have been cancelled, may be eligible for assistance to attend a training organisation to assist them to re-enter a training contract. Apprentices and trainees looking to complete any outstanding training with a training organisation, can find further details on the Funding Assistance application form.
Cancelled apprentices and trainees should also consider other avenues for assistance such as:
- Centrelink 13 28 50
- Job Network 13 62 68
- Workers Assistance Line 1800 035 749
- Group Training Organisations
- Australian Defence Force 13 19 01
For Employers
Employers who identify an apprentice or trainee on the Out-of-Trade Register as meeting their business needs, should complete the employer registration form or email apprenticeshipsinfo@qld.gov.au and:
- quote the Out-of-Trade Register vacancy number of the apprentice/trainee that is of interest, and
- leave their contact details.
An officer from the department will liaise with the apprentice/trainee of interest to discuss the employment option.
For employers who are looking at recruiting an out-of-trade apprentice/trainee as their first apprentice/trainee, please see the Business section to find out more about employing an apprentice/trainee.
Employers who can not find an apprentice/trainee matching their criteria on the Out-of-Trade Register can also be placed on a separate unpublished register when they identify that they have the capacity to employ an apprentice/trainee:
- in a permanent capacity either full-time, part-time or school-based, or
- on a temporary basis to assist them when the apprentice or trainee are:
- on temporary stand down, or
- in their final stage of training.
Employers interested in registering with this service can complete the employer registration form online or email apprenticeshipsinfo@qld.gov.au, providing the following details:

- trade/s they can provide training in
- location where apprentice/trainee will be employed
- level of apprentice/trainee they are looking for
- number of apprentices/trainees they are able to employ or assist.
An officer from the department will contact the employer when an apprentice or trainee becomes available that matches their requested business requirements.
