Employers' responsibilities
When offering you an apprenticeship or traineeship, your employer has certain responsibilities. Your employer must:
- in discussion with you, choose an Australian Apprenticeship Centre
- in discussion with you, choose a training provider
- go through the induction information with the Australian Apprenticeship Centre, training provider and yourself
- sign the training contract
- when the training contract has been completed and signed by all parties, send it to your Australian Apprenticeship Centre
- work with the training provider to ensure that:
- the workplace has the range of work and facilities required for your training
- there is an acceptable number of tradespeople or qualified persons in the workplace
- you will be adequately supervised when you are in the workplace
- work with you and the training provider to draw up your training plan
- not terminate the employment of an apprentice or trainee unless the apprenticeship or traineeship is completed or training contract has been cancelled.
When accepting an apprenticeship or traineeship, you have certain responsibilities. You must:
- attend and arrive on time for work as instructed by your employer
- attend training at work or at another training venue
- work towards achieving the competencies agreed in the training plan
- keep your training record in your possession and ensure it is regularly signed by your employer and your training provider (at least every three months)
- pay tuition and student fees to your training provider (your employer may pay these on your behalf)
- not terminate employment with your employer unless the apprenticeship or traineeship is completed or the training contract has been cancelled.
