Details about the training contract
A training contract legally binds you and your employer. It documents the roles and responsibilities of you and your employer during the apprenticeship or traineeship. A training contract is used to register your apprenticeship or traineeship.
The training contract must be completed during the apprenticeship or traineeship probationary period and given to your Australian Apprenticeships Centre before the end of this probationary period.
If you do not do this, your apprenticeship or traineeship may not be registered.
As the training contract is an important document, make sure you understand and check the information in it before you sign it.
Read the information sheet about the training contract.
Parent/guardian requirements
If you are under 18 years of age and under the care and control of a parent or legal guardian, your parent or guardian must be a party to the training contract and ensure that you adhere to the responsibilities attached to the contract.
Once you turn 18, your parent or guardian ceases to be a legal party to the training contract and is no longer responsible for your apprenticeship or traineeship.
Read the information sheet about parent/guardian requirements.
Nominal term of training contract
The training contract, as a legal contract, has a start date and a nominal term. Nominal terms have been set in the department's consultation with the particular industry.
Competency-based training
Most apprenticeships and traineeships are practiced under competency-based training which places emphasis on the workplace application of attained knowledge and skills - not how long is spent or the amount of knowledge acquired in a formal learning environment.
Once all competencies outlined in a training plan have been achieved, and all parties agree, the apprentice or trainee can complete their apprenticeship or traineeship, irrespective of the time served.
